
The CODeS research group is part of the Department of Computer Science at KU Leuven. The overall research theme of CODeS includes the design, analysis and application of algorithms for combinatorial optimisation problems. The group investigates the construction of models, the behaviour and the application of algorithms for combinatorial optimisation and builds upon more than a decade of intense activity in this field. The group, located in Ghent, is part of the Faculty of Engineering Technology, which has a prolific industrial collaboration history. In the past few years, Reuters has consistently ranked KU Leuven as Europe's most innovative university.

In today’s organizations employees expect robust and fair rosters and want a level of autonomy in determining their schedules. Research on models and algorithms for personnel scheduling has not caught up with these emerging challenges. At present, there is no satisfactory way of (mathematically) formulating and quantifying these human-centred problem characteristics, which consequently, also represents uncharted territory for algorithm development. This project aspires to (1) extend personnel rostering theory towards a more human-centred paradigm and (2) develop dedicated algorithms for the identified problem classes.

Profile
We are looking for two highly motivated PhD students.

Profile 1: Master's degree relevant to theoretical computer science, computational complexity, combinatorial optimisation, discrete mathematics. The candidate should have experience in using a modern programming language to implement algorithms.
Profile 2: Master's degree relevant to computational computer science, algorithms and datastructures, combinatorial optimization. The candidate should have provable experience in the implementation of efficient algorithms in a modern programming language.
For both profiles we expect candidates to:
